Terms of Use
Last updated 19 July 2026
Icteria is an independent research prototype provided free of charge. By using it, you agree to these terms.
The service
Icteria identifies birds from audio recordings and produces informational field reports. Species identifications are automated estimates from acoustic models and may be wrong — treat them as guidance, not confirmed records. Verify anything important (rare species, conservation decisions) with an expert or eBird before relying on it.
Acceptable use
- Use the app for lawful, non-commercial monitoring and learning.
- Only upload audio you have the right to use.
- Do not attempt to overload, scrape, reverse-engineer, or abuse the service, or use it to harm others or wildlife (for example, to locate and disturb sensitive or nesting species).
- You are responsible for activity under your account; keep your credentials secure.
Attribution
Icteria builds on the work of others, used under their respective terms: BirdNET (Cornell Lab of Ornithology / Chemnitz University), HawkEars, YAMNet (Google), the eBird and NWS/NOAA / Open-Meteo APIs, BirdWeather, and OpenStreetMap. Icteria is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
No warranty & liability
The service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of it, including decisions made based on its output.
Changes
We may update the app or these terms as the prototype evolves. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
